Plot Forming

May 18, 2006 at 6:40 am (On Writing, The Mauve Eye, World Building, Writing Life)

Well, after promising myself I would start plotting Mauve Eye days ago, I suddenly decided I wouldn’t, I need a realluy good plot in my head before I get anything on paper, and I already have the culture of my Witch Hunters firmly in place.

It’s a realaly great culture and it fits my nameless main character perfectly, I am already getting scene ideas just from simple background info. Now I will go onto to some location work and mapping, which is always fun. Then, hopefully I need to work on religions, government etc… I am really going into depth with this one because I’ve learned from previous mistakes. I need almost everything in place before I begin.

THen finally, once wordbuilding is over I will be able to get to grips with the little details of my MC, and I also need to work on another major character I have in mind.

Ooo…Exciting :)

The Reason I Hate MOST Fanfiction

May 16, 2006 at 4:10 pm (Reading Life, Writing Life)

Fanfiction, the ever growin, overused cliche that is currently littering the net. Basically writing a story set in another author's world and mostly with other author's characters. Yet young aspiring writers choose to write this and ask me "Oh will you review my fanfic, I'm a really good writer." Often the answer is a sharp "No" and I am about to explain why.

I don't get the idea of writing something which at the end you have to disclaim that it belongs to X Author, the fun of completing a piece which you can then go onto market is taken away.

Secondly, the worldbuilding aspect is taken away, ifyou can't world build then there is little point in writing it. I find world building one of the most fun, and essential, parts of writing and without it I wouldn't have any enthusiasm for actually writing the story.

Another fanfiction hate is when people write about the characters already created, another joy of writing is removed. I love character creation, I love to see my characters dance across the page, live and breathe and smile when he does things that I have added into his personality. That is not possible when fanfic writers use the author's characters.

There just seems to be no orginality in 99% of fanfiction, it has a half-baked plot, characters by the author that arn't written correctly and poor grammar. I have not read one that I like yet.

Beware of the fanfiction murderer!

No Inspiration

May 15, 2006 at 3:28 pm (The Mauve Eye, Writing Life)

For some reason I don't feel inspired to write, I can't seem to continue into my planning phase with Mauve Eye, I just keep on playing forum based RP sites, its a sort of writing but its cheating because I am playing in someone else's world. I really need to pull my thumb out and get on with planning Mauve Eye and then characterising my first person, who at the moment is "cold." I need more dimension to him, and maybe a little less evil considering he is the protagonist.

I aim to get a world started, after French homework, and then start fleshing out my map and deciding what exactly the story is. Yeah I've got "Witch Hunters" but it isn't exactly a story, I need to get a fantastic plot which will come after my characters and world.

Take Care.

The Beginning

May 2, 2006 at 4:58 pm (Hell's Tools, On Writing, Writing Life)

15000 words and the beginning and opening to the story as a whole is done.My MC has finally discovered himself and his aim and I have had a slight theme switch.

Various things have happened that I didn't want to so another plot revision looks hopeful.

Well my High School geography feild trip is going to get in the way of me increasing my word count next week, I may have to take a notepad and write there although the exhausting weork there may prevent that.

Enough?

May 1, 2006 at 5:48 pm (Hell's Tools, My Writing, Writing Life)

After reaching 14, 000 words I am half way through my plot that was planned to be 100,000 words. I already know that I can expand earlier chapters but I am starting to wonder whether I have enough to write, I may have to re look the plot or lower my target significantly, what ever I do the minimum I shall write is 80,000. I shall have to add in possibley another 40 scenes to write.

Oh Joy… Tip: Plot more than you think.

The 60 Page Mark

May 1, 2006 at 12:12 pm (Hell's Tools, Writing Life)

Well I wrote 800 words today and I reached the end of my 50th page, I’m really pleased with myself because Im relativley happy with what I have wrote. Yes there are many things that need changing but as I progress into my novel I pick up hints from experianced writers and I include them in my work.

My writing is becoming more mature, I owe this to reading epic fantasy. Reading, apparantly, consciously and subconsciously shapes your writing to be more mature and in turn much better to read.

Well onto page 61…

My WIP – Hell’s Tools

April 30, 2006 at 2:49 pm (Hell's Tools, My Writing, Writing Life)

At the moment I have planned and sketched out all characters and begun to write my first "serious" novel. I have called it "Hell's Tools" at the moment because the central conflict revolves around the items.

My word count so far is 11,500 words and I am working through it at a steady 500-1000 words a day, any more and I get tired and my writing becomes bland.

Of course, it is a dark fantasy, and the dark bits are REALLY DARK. Some of the evil things that have happened already make my bones shudder because its some of the most evil, horrific stuff I have ever written.

I love my villain and his backstory, I may even include some first person flash-backs. He is so simple yet so complex, I wanted to avoid the cliched Darth Vader knock off and add some originality into my characters. Apart from my villain I have a really cool cast of characters that I can't wait to pull into my plot (which is constantly changing).

Im really looking forward to completing this, then I will be having my first tast at publishing… Ill just focus on the writing for now. :)
